Cheshire House

Assessment & Development

Assessment & Development Programmes

Cheshire House has developed a comprehensive individual assessment based on the Guidelines of the Department of Health Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families. Learning programmes are directed to address the needs of both parents and children. Assessments are carried out for a minimum three to four month period, which may be extended if it is considered by all parties that the family would benefit from a longer period at Cheshire House.

Prior to admission, Cheshire House performs a full viability assessment, which investigates and explores all aspects of each families’ ability to undertake the assessment and the level of risk involved. It also establishes whether any further information is required to assess the level of risk. If so, further information would be requested before a decision is reached as to the suitability of the placement.

All family circumstances are different and at Cheshire House, the support plans are developed to take account of individual family needs. In some circumstances where early intervention is felt to be beneficial, Cheshire House offers a “pre–admission” support plan. This can even extend to before the birth of the child and in these circumstances Cheshire House can provide a member of the Family Development Team to attend the birth, if required.

The programme aims to support and guide parents towards independence, and to equip them with the appropriate skills that will continue when they return home. This includes renewing the parent’s self confidence and esteem as many of the parents who come to Cheshire House suffer from a lack of belief in their abilities, which adversely affects their move toward an independent lifestyle. We encourage parents to take up or continue with a hobby as a means of developing a sense of self worth.
